I sent a request through Yelp and received a note the next day from Rich. I’m out of state and was considering a car purchase online without seeing the car. 59 Auto received the vehicle from a local dealer and did an overall inspection of the vehicle. All correspondence, payment, and written report were received online. They did a great job! A non-biased review and report on the vehicle was done and done so very professionally. I would recommend them to anyone local or long distance. They were thorough and extremely professional!

My father brought his 2014 Toyota Avalon to this shop 2.5 years ago for a passenger-side wheel bearing replacement. The bearing failed prematurely after roughly 20,000 miles. When I removed the knuckle to install loaded knuckles, I discovered alarmingly poor and unsafe workmanship: • The axle nut was never staked which would compromise bearing preload if it loosens. • No cotter pins were installed on the tie rod end or lower ball joint (the technician broke the originals and was apparently too lazy to drill the holes for new ones). • The critical thrust washer/dust deflector that seats behind the knuckle was completely missing. This part serves more then one purpose according to Toyota. These are not minor oversights. Without staking and cotter pins, vital components can loosen or separate under driving loads. The missing thrust washer/deflector contributed to excessive axial play in the hub, creating a serious risk of the wheel detaching from the vehicle. It also caused severe inner-edge tire wear on the front tires. When my father called the shop about the missing part, they dismissively told him “the vehicle doesn’t need it” insinuating that there master tech is smarter than the Toyota engineers. This level of carelessness and arrogance is unacceptable. I strongly warn others to avoid this shop for suspension or bearing work.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

I see you removed the line in your review where you say you will take down your review if we give you free tires. To clarify our records, the wheel bearing service was completed almost four years ago. Regarding the component in your photo, that part is a dust shield, not a thrust washer. The shield does not affect bearing preload, hub alignment, or tire wear, nor could a passenger-side bearing issue cause tire wear on the driver’s side. While the dust shield was removed to prevent noise issues—and is no longer available as a standalone part—we hold our work to strict safety standards. When your father called, our team was attempting to gather information to understand what was happening with the vehicle. We sincerely apologize if that felt dismissive, as our intention is always to listen and help. We stand firmly behind our work with a 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty. While we cannot commit to replacing tires sight unseen, we explicitly offered to bring the vehicle in for a complete inspection. If an inspection showed that any tire wear was directly caused by our original service, we pledged to make it right. Rich also offered to check the front end for worn parts and align the front end of the vehicle for free as this is the most likely cause of your tire wear. Our offer to help still stands. We would welcome a constructive, direct conversation with you so we can address your concerns properly. Please call our shop at (815) 254-9959 and ask for Rich. I cannot recommend 59 Auto repair enough. They made a customer for life! I was quoted at more than double the cost from my dealer. 59 Auto took in my car, did their own inspection and saved us HUNDREDS by taking out work that didn't need to be done! First time here for a big repair. The high mileage Subaru needed head gaskets and other repairs. First we went our our local mechanic in Crest Hill who we have used for over 10 years who promptly told us they could not complete or even do the repair. Then we went to 59 Auto Repair and not only were they able to do the repair it was completed faster than anticipated! Very satisfied with their service and expertise and highly recommend this shop.

I had a great experience when I brought my 2021 Buick Encore to 59 Auto for a spring tune-up. Oil change, tire rotation, etc. They provided me with a ride home and had my car ready in plenty of time for my afternoon Dr. appointment. Their service is very well organized. Everyone is very friendly and efficient. Their courtesy driver was very helpful and friendly. I would advise anyone to take their vehicle to them for top-notch service.

59 Auto was recommended to me to do the alignment on my car. It's almost 40yrs old and it takes both talent and artistry to align older cars. Dropped the car off and picked it up later the same day. The car drives straight as an arrow. I don't think it's ever driven this straight in the almost nine years I've had the car. Highly recommend 59 Auto Repair!

59 auto did a horrible job on getting my car re-aligned. They dropped the car before the lift was all the way down and broke the exhaust manifold. Now months later I find they caused more problems-they pushed the exhaust system so that the muffler was on the floor board and tail pipe got pushed into the upper rear cross member. They charged me $315.00 for alignment, which they did not refund. I had to fix all the things they messed up and pay for another realignment. I will NEVER return to auto 59, nor will I recommend it to any one. Terrible service.

The issue was not with the lift, but with how low the exhaust sat on the vehicle due to it being a custom classic vehicle. The exhaust caught the ground on the way off the lift. The exhaust was repaired back to the way it was when the vehicle came in at no charge to you. I dropped the car off Tuesday night. WED No faults found. You kept the car THUR for a road test No Faults found. You kept it Friday for a road test and No Faults found. I then drive 4 minutes away and have a flashing check engine light and return to shop. You might be able to understand my perception that no road test were ever done, especially when I gave a very detailed explanation as to when I was getting faults. I do know that if a fault can NOT be duplicated there is not much you can do but for me to get a fault not even a mile away you might understand my perception and frustration that I think of your repair shop. Jim and James were very nice and you did not charge me a diagnostic for the 3 days you tried to troubleshoot the car

I went to an auto parts store to have my charging system checked on my 2014 Honda CRV. They performed a system test and said the alternator showed being bad. I took my car to 59 Auto. And they checked it out, tested the alternator and battery. Their test showed the alternator was charging at required voltage but the battery was bad. They installed a new battery and had me back on the road in 3 hrs. Great job!

SPRINTER VAN……Horrible and nothing but parts changers for my application…..Brought my Sprinter van in for an exhaust leak and check engine light on. Originally quoted $180 diagnostic fee which turned into over $600 once in the repair bay. Fine I get it let’s get it fixed! Picked vehicle up after 3 days in the shop which they insisted they were qualified to work on this kind of vehicle also explained the loud whining noise coming from the turbo is normal……didn’t sound like that when I brought it in so fix it which the did, they had improperly install a part they changed out that wasn’t even needed. Left to go on a service call could hardly breathe in the cab after they claimed to have repaired the exhaust leak not to mention check engine light came on which sent the van in break down mode had to turn around, miss my emergency service call and go back to this shop. Time for more diagnostic’s fees parts changing and down time, waiting only to have the service writer tell me to go buy a code reader and reset the codes every time check engine light comes on…..not very professional at all not to mention this is a qualified Napa repair shop. Went to another shop (Certified Auto Repair in Naperville) they found the problem, a bad fuel injector causing unburned fuel to leak into the cab setting check engine light on….not to mention a exhaust leak at the turbo on a bolt that was loose. They did replace the radiator hoses which work out but bottom line after $4600 I left with the van in worst running condition then when I first brought it it. Glad I didn’t listen to them and spend more money to buy a code reader I had it fixed properly. I’m not saying they are bad at all repairs but BEWARE make sure they are for sure qualified to work on your specific vehicle. Shame, I was going to bring my fleet of vehicles for service but after taking my first it will be my last. Thanks for the $4500 lesson in life not to mention lost wages and customers I incurred!!!!

Thank you Mark for taking the time to review us. When the vehicle was originally brought in, we went over that the initial diagnostics would be $180 and if we needed more, we would call you first. Unfortunately, the vehicle had been at other repair shops before coming to us. The shop before us had repaired the turbocharger on your vehicle. You wanted us to check out the fact that the EGR kept resetting codes on the vehicle and the EGR valve had been replaced multiple times. The vehicle came in with a completely clogged EGR cooler, which is what was setting the EGR codes. We explained that we had to fix the EGR cooler first, and that there was probably other issues as the vehicle came in with 7 codes related to the turbo. The second time your vehicle came in, we checked it over at no charge to you. We rechecked all the repairs that were completed by our shop, and repaired a leak under warranty at the EGR cooler that was causing the whistling noise. The whistling noise was gone before your vehicle left our shop. We also cleaned your converter per your request as we were having back pressure and turbo issues. You were never charged for this visit as we stand behind all work that we complete. We unfortunately have no affiliation with the other shop that worked on your vehicle and were not willing to fix their repairs for free. We talked to Mercedes, who you brought your vehicle to after us, and they told you the same thing that we did, to bring it back to who installed the turbocharger as there were issues with it. You then finally brought the vehicle back to the shop who originally installed the turbocharger and had them fix the exhaust leak at the turbocharger which was under warranty there. The work that we performed was verified by an ASE Master Technician as necessary. As we explained, the vehicle had multiple issues that needed to be addressed, and that the vehicle may have other issues that are not known until what is visibly broken is fixed. 59 Auto helped me with a repair of a 6 year old tire that 3 other places wouldn't even look at because of its age. The tire actually is in pretty good condition with plenty of tread and no rot They saved me the replacement cost of as many as 4 tires because it's not advisable to replace just one radial tire.

I've been a customer for years and I've always received great service. Recently I have not been happy and would not recommend them to anyone. I brought my car in for an oil change. I left the shop leaking coolant. It definitely wasn't leaking BEFORE I came in. I didn't say anything to them. I took it to my regular mechanic and got it fixed. Last week I was in need of an oil change and my mechanic was off. I went against my better judgment and took it back to them. This time, I left the shop and jumped on 55 going into the city when my oil light came on. They sent a tow truck to come get me but I had to wait hours and wasted my day. They kept my car for 3 more days and really didn't apologize for any inconvenience to me. When I walked in to pick up my vehicle, they made me feel like I was the one who made a mistake. Needless to say I will not be back.

Ok so my headlights went out left car to be repaired they fixed headlights but said there mechanic shorted out my abs module. Ok so I drive approx 1 year no abs system they say they can't get part. I do a 360 donut coming out of my garage in winter still no module. So I call and say I'm going to have to get a lawyer within a day or two now they have the part. So I bring car they put it in all is well except now my power steering is jacked up leaving the car it was fine pulling away terrible so hard to turn the wheel. So ask urself does this seem fishy a place u want to bring ur car? After they ruined my abs system and all of a sudden my power steering is nothing like it used to be I'm driving it this way cause I do not trust to bring my car there again so beware before u bring it car here seem to be damaging stuff on people's car to make more money 💰😔

We took full responsibility at the time and have never charged you for your ABS module. When this happened at the end of November, we were able to find 3 modules. They had all been previously installed on vehicles. Once the module has been given a VIN, it can never be given a different VIN, which we explained to you. The part had to come from the dealership and was on national backorder with no ETA. We did everything that we could to get the first 3 modules here, which were bad out of the box. Then we called every Friday to check on the ETA for your part. You called when Nicki was on the other line, and we asked you to hold for an update, as she had spoken with the dealership earlier in the day about your part. Instead of being patient while she wrapped up with another customer or accepting our offer for a call back when she was done, you started to get irate and threatened to sue us. We cannot make the dealership give us a part that they do not have. If you had been patient, you would have learned, without threating us, that Nicki already had one on the way. The steering feels different because you grew used to driving the vehicle with the module malfunctioning, and now the vehicle feels as it should. We rechecked the vehicle the day we installed the module, and have offered to recheck it again, without further charges to you. Please call us at (815)254-9959 if you have any further questions.

I've been going to 59 Auto for years for all of my cars. This is an incredible family-owned business who does excellent, reliable work and really cares about their customers. They're extremely flexible in getting you in when you have an issue, keep you up to date with the details of their work, and offer shuttle service if you need to get home while they're working on your car. The office staff is incredibly knowledgeable about car issues and are always happy to help discuss what's going on over the phone before you come in. And they always provide you recommendations on upcoming services you're car may need without being pushy - they work against the maintenance schedule for the vehicle and mileage, which is a great reminder to help keep your car getting the preventive maintenance you need. I've always found them to be competitive with the dealerships, and they try and get you the best deals on parts for more expensive repairs. They even gave me some advice on what to do about a car issue when I was 500 miles away from home to help make sure I could get back safely without issues. Definitely the place to go for honest, reliable repairs and car work with excellent service.

Highly recommend 59 Auto. Always friendly staff. I have had several vehicles here over the last few years. Vehicle repair isn’t cheap but way cheaper than buying a new car. Especially now. Honest upfront pricing. Pricing includes parts and labor. I’m sure that’s a shock for most people see the labor breakdown but work isn’t free. They have a business to run. If you could do it yourself you would. Still waaaaay cheaper than a dealer. I have done work on my own vehicles but some things I just don’t want to mess with anymore I take it to the pros. They have never added anything on. What they quote is what you pay. They honor their warranty they give as well. They complete the work in a timely manner. One occasion they had my vehicle for a day longer but that was because part had to come from manufacture and was delayed. I’m rambling but short story longer, don’t think twice about taking your vehicle to 59 Auto.

We are very pleased with the service we have received over the years from 59 Auto Repair. Their evaluations before beginning a repair are ALWAYS accurate and thorough. The work is done expertly and completed in a timely manner as promised. They are persistent in finding the causes to all our mechanical, electrical and computer problems. We would not think of servicing our three vehicles anywhere else. This is an update on 06/06/23: We continue to receive oustanding and honorable service from 59 Auto. We had a blower motor problem which was fixed on 02/06/23. After 4 months of operation, the blower motor resistor unfortunately went out and caused the blower motor to stop working. Brought the car in. No questions asked and the problem was rectified, NO CHARGE !, NOT EVEN A SERVICE FEE !!! Just an example of how 59 AUTO operates.

BMW x3 2013 was taken in for an oil leak from the rear of the engine. Problem was coming from valve cover that was previously repaired by this repair shop.They stuck by their repair warranty and covered the repair at no cost. I give them an A for honesty.

Gave me estimate for replacing rear pinion seal over $700. Brought vehicle to Chrysler dealer and was charged $185 for same repair. Labor guides are used for this reason. Will never go back or recommend them.

Brought my Frontier in because it wasn’t heating in cold weather. I thought that the thermostat was bad. They diagnosed it and found that it was now heating They didn’t try to upsell or pressure to do any work. I suspect that maybe there was an air bubble that was eliminated when they took the radiator cap off to check coolant level. They has every chance to suggest expensive repairs but they were very honest with me. Paid for the diagnostics. Truck heated up on way home. I will use them in the future.

The front end team at 59 Auto was difficult to work with. One of my tires had a slow leak and was under warranty, but because the tests they ran (which of course are not under normal road conditions) did not show a leak, they refused to replace the tire. I ended up paying for the replacement and will never go back again. The response they have to Andrew Sullivan's review to show him how many ways he was wrong exemplifies their lack of customer service. It is what I experienced as well and it's unfortunate that a small local shop does not have a better sense of service and loyalty.

Like a lot of people I have had bad experiences with many repair shops. And Route 59 is now added to the list because they absolutely do not advocate for their customers. They are just one of many shops that seemingly try to add on as many charges as possible even if it means charging their customers for things, me as the customer, were not at all responsible for. I had to get my transmission replaced and thankfully it was covered under the warranty I purchased with the car with a very affordable deductible. For context, the warranty company made some poor decisions in terms of ordering a replacement transmission. The first transmission they ordered was missing parts so Route 59 decided to take parts off my broken transmission, put it in the new transmission and then installed it. That transmission failed to work properly which was not surprising at all. The warranty company ended up ordering a brand new transmission. Once Route 59 got the second trans they obviously repeated the steps to install the new transmission. After my car being there for about a month and a half I was expecting to pay somewhere around $100-125. They charged me $245. When they installed both transmissions they had to fill up the transmission fluid and they ended up charging me for both refills even though the first transmission was a failure. I tried to get some clarity as to why I am responsible to pay for the mistakes of them and the warranty company. To which they replied it’s not fair to them to eat the extra $60 cost for the one transmission fluid refill because they were operating off of the decisions that the warranty company made. Even though they received almost $10,000 from the warranty company. Both refills tacked on $120 extra on top of my deductible. Plus they charged me for what they called shop fees which means if they use rags or consumables for the repair. Of all the extra charges that is the only one that I could understand. On top of all of this, from the start they said my deductible was only $50, which I was ecstatic about and which helped me be patient for the 6 weeks my car was there. When I went to pick up the car they then said my deductible was actually $100, even though the invoice literally said “Customer pay $49.92” under the warranty information. I also asked for clarity on that and they said “Oh that’s not what that is” but for some reason couldn’t elaborate anymore than that. No one at the shop mentioned the deductible was $100 until I had to pay at the shop which I really did not appreciate. After this experience I am more than happy to take my business elsewhere. They’ve lost my business indefinitely.

Nicki spent over 4 hours on the phone and our technicians spent many more advocating for you with your warranty company to get as much as possible covered, as well as making sure the job was done properly, even getting you a rental car that you declined since the service would take so long. She also advocated with you initially where she went above and beyond calling the dealership to find if you had any factory coverage or aftermarket coverage. She found you had an aftermarket policy that you had forgotten about and was able to get your transmission covered for you. The first transmission sent over was not missing parts, but came as just the transmission, not the clutch or additional components that a new transmission would come with. There was nothing externally wrong with the transmission sent over, so we could not verify it would not work without installing it. After that transmission failed, we advocated for you again with your insurance company to get you a brand new transmission, as well as a new clutch which is not normally covered under your policy.
